This tip sheet is the product of the dedicated work of the Center of Scholars and Storytellers at UCLA 2023 FAST Fellows, Joseph Wright, with support from fellow Conner Allen. I served on the advisory council providing expertise, research, guidance and support in developing this tip sheet.
In collaboration with USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center’s Media Impact Project, this report examines how gun safety and prevention measures are currently being depicted on television and how storylines impact viewers. The report also highlights the importance of depicting gun violence prevention measures and gun safety practices. We used the research to develop our guidelines for depicting gun violence on screens and launched this initiative with behind the scenes convos with TV writers and showrunners.
